From expanding trade to tackling debt and climate change, stronger international cooperation is crucial more than ever to safeguarding prosperity for all in an increasingly interconnected and multipolar world. Speaking at a high-level event this week in the Indonesian city of Bandung, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Deputy Secretary-General PEDRO MANUEL MORENO renewed calls for collective efforts to fulfill the promise of globalization that leaves no one behind. The event was held as part of a series of events to mark the 60th anniversary of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). While much has evolved over the last six decades, the organization, which has 195 member states, remains a staunch advocate of developing countries on the global stage, while charting a new development course in a changing world. “Our mission is a new UNCTAD for a new world,” Mr. Moreno said. “We want to provide policy options to developing countries that can lead to more and better development outcomes, and to advocate for more justice and fairness in global fora.” Find out more: https://ow.ly/o79l50RJwwq #UNCTAD60

A matter of survival: Why small island states need resilience and prosperity. The #WeeklyTradecast looks at low-lying coastal countries and the unique threats they face from climate change with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) senior economist Mussie Delelegn. The resilience and prosperity of these countries is the focus of the United Nations’ fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States in late May. Known as SIDS, these dozens of small island states are the most vulnerable to extreme weather, rising seas and coastal erosion brought on by climate change. The human and economic costs are enormous. If climate trends continue, some of the islands could soon disappear under the waves. Listen in to senior economist Mussie Delelegn to learn how the SIDS can build their economies, protect their people and mitigate the impact of climate change. https://ow.ly/B5ra50RJtLh

UN Trade and Development chief to visit Panama Canal ahead of first Global Supply Chain Forum. During the visit set for 18 and 19 May, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan will see first-hand the increasing impacts of climate change on the Panama Canal. This exacerbates existing geopolitical challenges that are straining global trade and supply chains. Notably, these include ongoing disruptions in the Black Sea linked to the war in Ukraine, and recent attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. The Panama Canal is a critical global trade route linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and confronting low water levels, due to below-normal rainfall driven by the climate phenomenon “El Niño”. Earlier analysis by UN Trade and Development estimated that total transits through the canal plummeted by 49% in January and 42% by April 2024, compared to the peak in December 2021. The secretary-general’s visit comes ahead of the first-ever Global Supply Chain Forum, to be staged by UN Trade and Development and the Government of Barbados in Bridgetown from 21 to 24 May. The least developed countries (LDCs) were severely affected by a challenging aid landscape. In 2022, aid flows to LDCs declined by 4%, falling to $62 billion. This followed an 8% decrease the previous year. The drop is steeper than for other developing countries, where aid peaked in 2021 and fell by 2% the following year. As a result, least developed countries’ share of global Official Development Assistance (ODA) decreased to 22% in 2022, the lowest share in over a decade. Full story: https://ow.ly/gbJc50RAPbj
