  • Noodle maker plans busiest port in west Africa

On the east side of Lagos, the company that turned 20-cent packets of instant noodles into a staple of the Nigerian diet is building the biggest port in west Africa with $1bn of Chinese money. Singapore-based Tolaram Group is set to close financing this week for what could be the busiest port in west Africa, a project it said would help transform Africa’s largest economy. It is also the biggest development Tolaram has ever undertaken, and a long way from its roots as a textile trader founded by Indians in Indonesia in the 1940s. It is being built on the back of a $450m annual business that has turned Indomie noodles into one of Nigeria’s national dishes and Tolaram into the largest food company in Africa’s biggest market, surpassing the likes of Unilever and Nestlé. “This is a real game changer for us, doing project financing of this scale . . . It’s easy to raise money for a factory — you need $30m, $50m. But you want to raise $800m? That’s a whole different ballgame,” said Haresh Aswani, Tolaram’s managing director for Africa and grandson of its founder. The new port will be financed with $630m from the China Development Bank, and $470m in equity from the state-owned China Harbour Engineering Company, which has a 52.5 per cent stake and will build it. Tolaram owns 22.5 per cent, the Nigerian Ports Authority has 5 per cent and Lagos state 20 per cent. The project is a new chapter for Tolaram. Mr Aswani’s uncle turned the company into an international conglomerate with textile factories in India, property interests in eastern Europe (including a luxury apartment complex in the former KGB headquarters in Tallinn), carpet manufacturing in China and a polymers plant in the UK. But it was Tolaram’s decision to begin importing Indomie to Nigeria in 1988, the same year Mr Aswani moved there, that transformed the company. Over the next two decades, it shed its other business, with the exception of the Tallinn real estate, to focus almost exclusively on Indomie. In 1995, the company entered a joint venture with Salim Group, the Indonesian company behind Indomie, and began manufacturing in Nigeria the next year. Growth came slowly — it took 13 years for revenues to reach $10m in Nigeria — before sales began doubling annually by the mid-2000s. Indomie is now in every corner market stall across Nigeria, and in most kitchen cupboards — a cheap, stomach-filling staple that is so ubiquitous it features in rap lyrics. However, Nigeria can be a fickle market. Government policies change quickly and can cripple businesses. In 2015, Abuja curbed raw palm oil imports, just after Tolaram had spent tens of millions on a new palm oil factory. After the oil price crash sent Nigeria’s crude-dependent economy into recession in 2016 and the naira was devalued by roughly half, revenues slumped to “next to nothing”, which Tolaram weathered in part because its financing was in naira rather than dollars. “When you do business here you have to mitigate your risk, so you hedge, number one, and two, you try and get as much local financing as possible,” said Mr Aswani. “Sometimes it’s at a high cost but if something goes wrong, it’s worth it.” Tolaram operates in nine countries, recently expanding to Egypt, and has plans to move into Ethiopia and Kenya. Nigeria accounts for $900m of the group’s $1.1bn of annual sales. • Chinese consumers spend US$22 billion in first nine hours of Alibaba’s Singles’ Day 11.11

If you have any doubts about the scale of the #China & #Asian #ecommerce sector today is a wake up call. Chinese consumers collectively spent 158.31 billion yuan (US$22.63 billion) in the first nine hours of Alibaba’s Singles’ Day shopping extravaganza, scooping up everything from consumer electronics to luxury items and even cars. The figure is two thirds of last year's final tally of US$30.8 billion. Alibaba’s Singles’ Day shopping festival, which falls on November 11 every year, is the world’s largest of its kind. The festival will be closely watched this year as a barometer for consumer sentiment 16 months into a US-China trade war and amid a slowdown in the Chinese economy. While the company’s e-commerce marketplaces Tmall and Taobao are traditionally the mainstays of the annual shopping extravaganza, this year’s festival will also include business-to-business e-commerce platforms like AliExpress as well as Lazada, Alibaba’s Southeast Asian e-commerce subsidiary, as the company taps international consumers. Alibaba Group Holding is the parent company of the South China Morning Post. Hong Kong, the US, the UK, Australia and Japan were among the top overseas buyers in early business. At the open, the top 5 regions in mainland China in terms of transactions were Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Shandong. Opening sales were brisk, hitting US$10 billion in just under 30 minutes, half the time from the previous year. GMV for the Double 11 Global Shopping Festival is the total value of orders settled through Alipay on Alibaba’s consumer-facing core commerce platforms, as well as Lazada and AliExpress, within a 24-hour period on November 11. It is reported on a real-time basis and includes shipping charges paid, according to Alibaba. Apart from Alibaba, rival sites such as JD.com and Pinduoduo have also launched their own Singles’ Day campaigns, to entice buyers to spend on their platforms. “Singles’ Day is becoming more recognised worldwide … but since it is still very much a domestic holiday and event, it is a true test of Chinese consumer power,” said Benson Ng, EY Greater China digital advisory leader. Singles’ Day got its name from its date. Written numerically as 11/11, the date looks like “bare branches”, a Chinese expression for the single and unattached. As a kind of antidote to the societal pressures of being in a relationship, many of China’s singles began splurging on themselves on Singles’ Day, which became seen as a type of anti-Valentine’s Day. Alibaba held its first Singles’ Day shopping event in 2009 as a promotional campaign, but these days it has morphed into a show of China’s collective consumer spending power. Last year, consumers spent 4,000 times more than they did during the first ever Singles’ Day event. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Business leaders with an interest in China and the markets across Asia need to join us for GTDW China Trade Development Week, 16-18 June, Shanghai Pudong. • Kenya & UK unite to tackle illicit goods at port

Kenyan and British authorities are working together to nab criminal networks in East Africa and beyond, especially those at the Port of Mombasa using the facility as a conduit for illicit trade. The two governments are rooting out illicit trade at the gateway to East Africa and safeguard a level playing field for legitimate businesses. In a joint statement from Commissioner-General of the Kenya Revenue Authority, Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the agencies said they would continue collaborating with international partners in detecting, disrupting and deterring all forms of illicit trade at the Port of Mombasa. The multi-agency security team working at the Port of Mombasa has disrupted an international criminal syndicate that has been smuggling into the country vehicles stolen overseas through an intensified surveillance and enforcement measures at all ports of entry and exits. The coordination between these agencies has led to the seizure of illicit goods including 21 high-end motor vehicles that the syndicate had stolen from the UK and attempted to sneak into the country through the port. Intelligence shared among the agencies indicated that the four vehicles estimated to be worth Sh40 million had been stolen from Berkshire, London, and Oxfordshire in UK between November 11, 2018 and February 7, this year and shipped into the country. “The vehicles, were meant for sale in the East African market. The Kenyan authorities involved in the interception of the goods says the vehicles had been declared as household items while others had been declared as cloned chassis numbers to hide their stolen status,” the agencies said in a statement read by KRA Acting Commissioner, Intelligence and Strategic Operations Dr Terra Saidimu. The authorities traced to Kenya the top-of-the-range motor vehicles after they were confirmed stolen in the Interpol’s motor vehicles database. Fabricated ingress clearance documents showed the vehicles were destined to the neighbouring country of Uganda but officials manning the custom section suspected that the high-end vehicles were likely to be diverted into the Kenyan market. The four vehicles were last week on Friday shipped back to their owners in the UK, who had reported to the authority the theft of their vehicles. The four vehicles — including a black Range Rover Vogue Autobiography, a white Mercedes Benz GLE and two black Range Rover Sports Autobiography — were loaded onto a truck and transported to a vessel ready for shipment to the UK. The multiagency team has also attributed the dismantling of the illicit trade to information and intelligence sharing with International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) and the UK’s National Crime Agency. British High Commissioner to Kenya, Ms Jane Marriot, said the UK was actively involved in monitoring, coordinating and liaising with the KRA to support the re-shipment of the four vehicles to their owners in the UK. "#ArtificialIntelligence has expanded the arsenal of devices available to them, however, #AI can be expensive to execute. As #fakes get all the more persuading, they’ll in the end, arrive at a sort of peculiarity, where human specialists will battle to differentiate between the genuine and the fake. These organizations offer innovations that examine materials, hues, #packaging and different attributes to spot fakes. IBM Research has created an AI #counterfeit detector that utilizes #blockchain and runs on a cell phone. • Vietnam & US customs join hands in fight against origin fraud

The customs authority of Vietnam has been proactively fighting fraud of origin and illegal trans-shipment, General Director of the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) Nguyen Van Can said on November 1. Hanoi (VNA) – The customs authority of Vietnam has been proactively fighting fraud of origin and illegal trans-shipment, General Director of the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) Nguyen Van Can said on November 1. In a working session with representatives from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Hanoi, Can also said the two sides have shared information and conducted joint investigations against those that violate laws of the US. The sector has conducted investigations for six specific cases related to goods exported to the US with Vietnamese origin, and proved that these goods are not eligible to be labeled made-in-Vietnam. Vietnam’s customs agencies will continue to work with the US side’s agencies to investigate and solve similar cases. They have also paid attention to modernizing customs processing, with 99 percent of customs declaration being processed through e-customs declaration systems, he said. With the support from the USAID, in the coming time, bilateral trade between Vietnam and the US will be promoted to ensure community safety and security, Can said. Vietnam Customs has received information from the US Customs on completing procedures for signing a cooperation deal between the two countries’ customs agencies, he added. According to Can, the agreement will include contents related to mutual technical assistance and information sharing to enforce the law of each side, thus promoting trade development, ensuring safety and security for the community, and fighting terrorism, smuggling and trade fraud. Addressing the event, USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick said illegal trans-shipment is a hot issue in the trade ties between Vietnam and the US, adding that the cooperation between the two countries in dealing with the issue also represents the commitment of the two governments. The USAID highly values the cooperation with the Ministry of Finance and the GDVC, she stressed. The USAID pledges to cooperate with all agencies in Vietnam to raising public awareness of preventing illegal trans-shipment, and in training and developing stronger regulatory frameworks to support authentic businesses, she said. #gtdwchina #asia #customs #customsmodernisation #mutualrecognitionagreements #usaid #asia #asiatrade #vietnam #fraud #illicittrade #brandprotection #ecustoms #etrade #paperlesstrade #singlewindow #collaboration #integrity

  • Can data provide the trust to rewrite the terms of trade?

Interesting article by EY that underlines the requirements for a multi stakeholder approach to digital trade, something we cover in depth at #gtdwchina #shanghai June: VIEW GTDW CHINA TRADE DEVELOPMENT WEEK PROGRAM For the global economy to prosper, we need trade to flow easily. How can we put trust back into a breaking system? The global economy prospers when trade flows easily. But tariff wars, protectionist policies and regulatory uncertainty have pushed global trade into crisis. Established business models and relationships are breaking down. Systemic problems that have slowed the flow of trade for decades are making the situation worse, and it is harder for organizations to respond. We believe it’s time for trade to transform. Better data and smarter technologies have revolutionized just about every corner of organizational life, yet when it comes to global trade, that’s not the case. From finance, to shipping to logistics, too much still depends on remarkably primitive processes despite the huge flows of money and goods involved. Sometimes that's because the organization’s own systems are not sufficiently automated. Other times it's because they’re participating in a network of trade relationships where key players have not invested in better technology. As a consequence, organizations are forced to work with data around trade that is often incomplete and unreliable. It comes from multiple sources and is frequently contradictory, or plain wrong. Mistakes occur. Governments don’t collect the right amount of tax. Companies don't take full advantage of free-trade agreements that are meant to benefit them and encourage commerce. When data can't be trusted, it can't be used to drive better business decisions. This is painfully frustrating for leaders. They want to set a strategic direction for their organization, but they are too often forced into actions that are rushed and tactical because they don’t have a comprehensive and reliable view of what’s really going on. And this lack of trust spreads like a virus. It creates friction, cost and risk across connected trade networks. It discourages collaboration and innovation. It creates acute economic uncertainty. And it slows progress toward better ways of working.
